Street Soccer Freestylers

Christ almighty! I saw a guy doing this on GOL TV the other night and all I can say its...wow! What mad skills! Whatever you call it, street soccer or soccer freestyle or urban freestyle, it's like martial arts crossed with ballet. And meanwhile I have trouble chewing gum and talking at the same time without biting my tongue. What coordination. What concentration. What a lot of time must go into training for this sport. The only thing I don't like is the use of crappy hip-hop music as a soundtrack.

The guy I saw is named Joe Davies (right and below) and you can read up about him and others of his ilk at the www.urbanfreestyler.com site. He even made a Nike video with Arsenal and France superstar striker Thierry Henry for Joga TV. This is a teaser of the thing I saw, but it looks like the folks at BBC Motion Gallery want to make you pay for seeing the full video: Urban Freestyler: Joe Davies. Shame, that.

There's a ton of these on YouTube under soccer freestyle.

The Best Street Soccer Freestyler

This freestyler above is Soufiane Touzani, a Moroccan freestyler who lives in Rotterdam (his track suit indicates he's a fan of the Dutch team Feyenoord). Many consider him the best.

And here's a promo for an instruction DVD that teaches you all the moves, from www.dukevideo.com:

And here's what some of these skills look like when put to use on the pitch:
