Happy Mienfoking Halloween !

ORIGINS OF THE JACKOLANTERN from Wikipedia
An old Irish folk tale tells of Stingy Jack, a lazy yet shrewd farmer who uses a cross to trap the Devil. One story says that Jack tricked the Devil into climbing an apple tree, and once he was up there Jack quickly placed crosses around the trunk or carved a cross into the bark, so that the Devil couldn't get down. Another myth says that Jack put a key in the Devil's pocket while he was suspended upside-down.

Another version of the myth says that Jack was getting chased by some villagers from whom he had stolen, when he met the Devil, who claimed it was time for him to die. However, the thief stalled his death by tempting the Devil with a chance to bedevil the church-going villagers chasing him. Jack told the Devil to turn into a coin with which he would pay for the stolen goods (the Devil could take on any shape he wanted); later, when the coin/Devil disappeared, the Christian villagers would fight over who had stolen it. The Devil agreed to this plan. He turned himself into a silver coin and jumped into Jack's wallet, only to find himself next to a cross Jack had also picked up in the village. Jack had closed the wallet tight, and the cross stripped the Devil of his powers; and so he was trapped. In both myths, Jack only lets the Devil go when he agrees never to take his soul. After a while the thief died, as all living things do. Of course, his life had been too sinful for Jack to go to heaven; however, the Devil had promised not to take his soul, and so he was barred from hell as well. Jack now had nowhere to go. He asked how he would see where to go, as he had no light, and the Devil mockingly tossed him an ember that would never burn out from the flames of hell. Jack carved out one of his turnips (which was his favourite food), put the ember inside it, and began endlessly wandering the Earth for a resting place. He became known as "Jack of the Lantern", or Jack-o'-Lantern.

Jessica smitten by all things Indian

International divas are making a beeline for India. Now, it's Jessica Simpson's turn to hit Indian shores. The singer, in fact, fell for everything Indian.

So, be it a traditional makeover with sari, mehndi and bindi or Bollywood songs, Jessica went all out to soak in Indian culture.

The American stunner writes on her Twitter account: "I am watching Slumdog Millionaire again. After being in India, I am amazed by everything I have been able to witness. Wow! magical moments."

For the uninitiated, the pop star shot for her new TV show-Price of Beauty in Mumbai. At a party thrown by Neha Dhupia.

Who represented Indian beauty for Jessica's show, she charmed in a turquoise sari embellished with antique gold work.

Though Jessica turned up in casual clothes, she wore the sari soon after entering the venue. Interestingly, Jessica was enjoying Bollywood music at the glamourous party. Though her sari was light, she managed it like a pro.

In fact, she also asked the lounge's VJ to play several Hindi songs as she tried hard to copy typical Bollywood dance steps. Jessica was spotted wearing a traditional trident-shaped bindi and mehndi. Already, it has made big news in the world media with Jessica being called "Henna hottie." She was spotted wearing mehndi designs even after her return to Los Angeles.

The Dukes of Hazzard star, who partnered with Neha for the Indian part of her show, was in Mumbai with her friends-Cacee Cobb and Hollywood stylist Ken Paves "to meet women, study local fashions, dietary fads and beauty regimes".

"Despite being a star, Jessica is humble. She showed respect for the the guests and mixed easily with them. She even tried to remember all the Indian names, but found it a bit difficult," says actress Sayali Bhagat, who attended the party.

Bollywood is the latest theme of Jessica's show. But it was not all glamour for the American beauty. She also went around Mumbai shopping for many things like chappals and ear-rings from places like Linking Road and Colaba besides tasting the famous paani-puri.

That's not all. The buzz goes that Jessica visited a girl who underwent a cleft operation she had sponsored besides going to a jewellery outlet to procure an expensive ethnic choker and ring set with Neha's help.

She reportedly also picked up a sari from Ritu Kumar's outlet. Simpson's visit to India comes after Julia Roberts filmed Eat, Pray, Love in the country and Kylie Minogue visited Mumbai to record a song, Chiggy wiggy, for Blue. Nicole Kidman too had visited Rajasthan to shoot for an ad campaign directed by Shekhar Kapur.

Lindsay too plans a trip Lindsay Lohan is all set to visit India for a charity event. "I'm going to India soon, actually, before Thanksgiving. I'm doing a documentary for the BBC Network," she said on the sidelines of an event in Los Angeles. Lindsay has revealed that she was inspired by Branson, whom she met in Dubai, to do charity work.

The Mean Girls star's ambitious project, reports suggest, is on the trafficking of children in Bihar. It will start soon. "We're just trying to work out the dates. I'm a little nervous, but I'm excited to do something like that. I think it is important to kind of have a voice when you can have one, and make a difference," she has said.

Big B ties up with Toonz for 3-D film

Years after it created the animated version of legendary court poet Tenali Raman to the applause of audiences around.

The world, Toonz Animation is giving the same treatment to Bollywood’s living legend Amitabh Bachchan.

Toonz has tied up with Amitabh Bachchan Corporation for a 90-minute animation film production, with an estimated production cost of Rs 20 crore.

The 3-D film, which features twin characters and has been given the working title, Twinergy, is predominantly aimed at Indian audiences, but will also be released for worldwide theatre audiences.

“The pre-production of the movie is over and we hope to complete production in time for the film to hit theatres by Diwali 2010”, Toonz Animation CEO P Jayakumar said here. “It is not easy for an animated version to compete with top-rung commercial movies at the theatres, and therefore we need to time the release well”, he said.

Mr Bachchan will give voice to the character and also have a share in the movie rights, but the funding risk is being taken by Toonz. Mr Bachchan is expected to start sound recording for the movie next month. Mr Jayakumar said Big B had been presented with seven different concepts for the movie, and that he had liked as many as four of them, from which one was chosen. The movie features adopted twin brothers in a palace, and has a lot of palace intrigue thrown in, complete with a greedy, power-hungry uncle.

While animated films may be distinctly different from regular productions that have human actors, Twinergy will be directed by Priyadarshan, of Bollywood and Mollywood fame. Toonz Animation, which completed a decade of operations this year, has a clientele including Disney, BBC, Marvel, Paramount, Universal, Cartoon Network and Hallmark, and has changed its profile from being a production house to being a one-stop solutions provider for entertainment major across the world.

Toonz Animation’s animated television series productions include ‘The Adventures of Tenali Raman’ and ‘Hanuman Returns’. The company is presently engaged in the production of two other 3-D movies in addition to the venture with Amitabh Bachchan Corporation, namely ‘Gatturo’, based on a Latin American character, and a Santa Claus movie to be released by Christmas 2010.

Kat - Who wouldn't talk to SRK?

Don’t shoot the postman for bringing in bad news is something Bollywood hasn’t heard of.

Ever since Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan had their historic squabble at Katrina Kaif’s birthday party last year.

The girl has carried the cross of the untoward incident. And every time she even bumps into SRK accidentally.

The media has a field day putting their meeting under a microscope. Katrina isn’t complaining about this.

But it is a matter of consternation for her. In the last week, she bumped into the Badshah of Bollywood.

On two occasions at Subhash Ghai’s wedding anniversary and Sussanne Khan’s birthday party, on October 24 and 25 respectively.

And media reports that followed both events only spoke of her interaction with SRK, almost making it seem like an aberration.

“I fail to understand why people must constantly focus on just one aspect of an event,’’ says Kat.

“I’m not complaining because I know that if you are in the eye of the media, it only means that you are important enough to them.

However, my bumping into Shah Rukh or spending time with him at an event is just a regular thing. I think people should stop trying to look for controversy in every nook and cranny. All of us are here to work. And we have common functions to attend. Naturally, when we’re under the same roof, we will interact. Why make a fuss? Who wouldn’t want to associate with Shah Rukh or Karan Johar?’’

She is aware that controversies don’t carry a star through. “After four years in the industry, I know fully well that if your work doesn’t speak for you, everything else is inconsequential,” admitted Katrina. “Believe me, I’m not excited about being in the paper everyday, or on TV, unless there is something in my career worth talking about. Media hype and publicity can’t sustain a star for long. It’s like an air balloon that can be pricked anytime... and will go phut.’’

Wanting to take her career to the next level, Katrina is keen to associate with makers like Karan Johar. Once again she isn’t looking for any smart-alec remarks on how she is switching camps. “Karan thinks out of the box. On the one hand, he makes a Dostana and then a path-breaking film like Wake Up Sid.

Naturally, I’d like to do a film for his banner. Likewise, working with Adi is a pleasure. He has a young unit and they work with clockwork precision. Doing a film for them is being on a school camp, but completely result oriented.’’

Having said that, Katrina still knows that she has achieved just 20 per cent of what actresses like Kareena Kapoor have. “Honestly, I have no illusions about where I’m positioned,’’ said the pragmatic girl. “I’m nobody’s fool and for the moment, all I want is to do is some good work.’’

"Shahid and I are not in touch" - Kareena Kapoor

Kareena Kapoor is one bold girl in Bollywood who calls a spade a spade. She spoke her mind out when she was seeing Shahid Kapoor; no different when she switched to Saif Ali Khan. Now, she revealed that she and Shahid are not in touch.

Kareena said that they shared a wonderful relationship in the past though they are not in touch with each other now. She added that they could wish each other well. She at least does that.We hope Shahid also does the same!

I've messed around with my system - Priyanka Chopra

Priyanka Chopra has just discovered she's suffering from an aggravated allergy.

Along with a digestive system that she "messed up" by constantly munching junk food.

"I had to shoot this scene on a bale of hay for a reality show that had contestants sweating it out in a slum.

I was supposed to jump on top of the hay and roll over it. It was then that I started feeling very uncomfortable," she says.

Later when she came home, she discovered her allergy has aggravated, along with a bout of food poisoning she was already suffering from.

"It happened due to junk food and I have to admit it was me who messed around with my (digestive) system.

The allergic reaction to the dust is settling down and I will be getting back on the sets in two more days," Priyanka adds.

Channel authorities at UTV Bindaas said it was Priyanka herself who agreed to get on the hay.

"We never knew that she has such a horrible allergy to dust and neither did she. When she started shooting, one of the unit boys noticed her eyes had become blood-shot. Then she started sneezing violently. We realised something had gone wrong. But we quickly moved ahead with the shoot but her condition was really bad by the time we finished the shoot in the slum. We have apologised to her for this incident," the channel official says.

Priyanka admitted she herself wasn't aware that she had such a strong allergy. "It's a new discovery for me. My dad tells me I have ruined his reputation because he is a doctor. But I told him that I am also an army officer's daughter (Dr Ashok Chopra was an army doctor) and this is only a phase. I am not a delicate darling I am strong enough. I'll now work towards restoring my health. I can't afford to fall sick so much," ends Priyanka.

Woe is Poe on Film?

Are Poe's short stories best served by shorts?

In today's Baltimore Sun, Chris Kaltenbach penned an article ("Macabre movies miss the mark") about the dearth of quality film adaptations of Edgar Allan Poe's tales. While Kaltenbach liked Jules Dassin's 1941 adaptation of The Tell-Tale Heart (which is available as an extra in Warner Brothers' The Complete Thin Man DVD boxset), he regretted that it was only 20 minutes long, lamenting that most feature film adaptations - usually by Roger Corman during his reign at AIP - missed the mark, though he gave a grudging pass to Corman's Nicolas Roeg-lensed 1964 version of The Mask of Red Death.

It's an interesting debate, one that makes me think that Kaltenbach was onto something. Maybe the master short story teller was best served by the short film medium, and maybe The Tell-Tale Heart was the Poe story best translated to film. In that case, here's a shout-out to my favorite Poe short, the 1953 UPA animated version narrated by James Mason.

The Tell-Tale Heart (1953)
Directed by Ted Parmelee
Narrated by James Mason

This Oscar-nominated short is essential viewing for Poe afficionados. It surprisingly comes from UPA, the studio whose animation style is most often associated with Mr. Magoo cartoons (as well as Gerald McBoing-Boing, for those who remember him!). James Mason's narration is inspired and atmospherically pitch-perfect! It captures the mood, tone and feel of Poe's story perfectly and is an incredible piece of work. Director Ted Parmalee also helmed a critically acclaimed adaptation of Hans Christian Anderson's The Emperor's New Clothes (1953) and went on to direct many TV episodes of The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show.

Watch it here:

For some reason this short turned up as an extra on the 2004 DVD release of the feature film Hellboy.

OK, while we're on the subject of Tell-Tale Heart shorts, another of my favorites for your consideration - though it takes outrageous comedic liberties with the Poe tale - is Jill Chamberlain's (much sought after) Poe-meets-Sex-in-the-City spoof The Tell-Tale Vibrator.

The Tell-Tale Vibrator (1999)
Written and Directed by Jill Chamberlain
(USA, 9 minutes, color)

"Let's just say that then title says it all in this provocative and extremely funny film"- RISD Film Festival catalog

I first saw this at the MicroCineFest in 1999. It played the festival circuit that year, winning the Jury Prize for Best Screenplay at the Atlantic City Film Festival and Best Short at the Saguaro Film Festival. As the title suggests, this humorous short tells the story of a single woman who, when her parents come to visit her in her new apartment in New York City for the first time, becomes unnerved by the tell-tale, albeit familiar, buzzing sound coming from her bedroom bureau.

Does anyone have a copy of this (hmmmm, Skizz?)? I remember it being really funny.

Ranbir Kapoor-Katrina Kaif walk the ramp for Rohit Bal

Fashion designer Rohit Bal delivered a fabulous grand finale.

Thus drawing the curtains on the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week.

Bollywood actors Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif walked the ramp for him in decorative ethnic wear.

Rohit’s collection was based on the magnificence of the Mughal era.

There were high quality velvets and handspun muslin cloth on display. His show also had gold-painted dancers who had been flown in from Orissa. They were noticed after they won a talent show on TV. The dance group, which includes daily wage laborers, performed “Dashavatar” (the 10 incarnations of Vishnu).

Meanwhile the final day of the Fashion Week saw models in saris and sherwanis on a glass ramp with metallic lotuses strewn around underneath. Most of the designers went traditional that day, including Jaya Rathore, Jyotee Khaitan and Rohit Mittal.

Hrithik to shoot intimate scenes with newcomer Monikangana

Kites is not alone when we talk about Hrithik Roshan’s intimate scenes in films. Hrithik will now have some passionate love scenes in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Guzaarish.

These scenes will be shot with Monikangana Dutta, a model and a debutante in Bollywood. The girl will play Hrithik’s former love interest in the film.

Although Hrithik is paired opposite Aishwarya Rai in this film but the two of them do not have any love making scenes in the film.

Monikangana has a very small but a very important role in the film. Sanjay Leela Bhansali wanted her chemistry with Hrithik to be visible in the film as she plays his former love interest.

Although they haven’t shot any scenes by far but Sanjay Leela Bhansali has already told them. As the Monikangana is new in the film industry.

She is very nervous about the scenes she has to shoot with Hrithik but it has come to be known that Sussane knows.

That these scenes have to be shot and has also spoken to Monikangana about them so that she feels a little relaxed.

Kareena to work for Shah Rukh Khans Ra.One

The recent buzz in Bollywood has it that Kareena Kapoor will be working with Shah Rukh Khan in his home production Ra.One.

In this film, Shah Rukh will play the role of a superhero who flies through the sky in order to save mankind.

Before this, Kareena and Shah Rukh have worked together in Asoka in 2001. After that she had refused to do Kal Ho na Ho for the money she was being offered.

But in the meanwhile she has also done a few dance numbers for him in his films Don and Billu. The movie Ra.One will go on floors in the month of December this year.

Slutty Halloween Costumes for your Teenage Daughters ?

"But Mommy why can't I wear it? Grandma dressed you like a slut when you were a little girl right" ?

from the GOTHAMIST
It's common for boring female grownups to dress up as slutty nurses/schoolgirls/nuns or whatever on Halloween, but now pre-teens are mimicking their airhead elders, and there's a whole range of sexually provocative costumes on sale for pre-pubescent girls. The retail chain Party City is well-stocked with everything to make this Halloween a happy one for pedophiles, from a pirate costume for 8-year-olds dubbed the "High Seas Hottie" to a "Devil Grrrl" costume that comes with a red miniskirt, fishnets, a tiny pitchfork, and the sales pitch: "This grrrl devil likes to get things heating up!" It gets creepier.

The store's lace Goldilocks costume has packaging assuring young customers that the attire is "all grown up, and you can have your porridge and more." A Post reporter who started asking questions about the costumes was "booted" from a Party City outlet on East Fourth Street, but one outraged mom tells the tabloid, "If girls get used to dressing like this, they might want to become a whore after Halloween."

Naturally, there are plenty more online, where the website Buy Costumes sells disturbing looks for kids such as Heidi and the Pink Maid, which promises that "cleaning house has never been so fun!" Ugh, it's only a matter of time before we start seeing "Slutty Diaper" costumes out there, isn't it?

Amrita to shape up

Sexy actress Amrita Rao who had been ill due to long hours of shooting, hired superstar Shah Rukh Khan's trainer to get her back in shape, said a source close to her. "Amrita wants to lose weight. She has been asked to go.

On a complete health diet comprising fruit and boiled vegetables as she is required to look completely fit." The 28-year-old actress, who played a coy beauty in films like Vivaah and Ishq Vishq, went for a glamour make-over for Shortcut and she sizzled on the cover of Maxim's October issue.

"Gracing the cover of India's largest selling men's magazine was a fantastic opportunity and it just goes to show I am one of the most desirable actors in Tinseltown," said Amrita in a press statement. She is also rumoured to be mastering kick boxing and aerobics these days.

I was scared walking the ramp with Katrina - Ranbir

Bollywood youth icon Ranbir Kapoor turns showstopper along with model-turned actress Katrina Kaif.

At the Rohit Bahl show of Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week here but says he was nervous while sashaying the ramp with her.

"I was pretty nervous to face the stage with a veteran model like Katrina. The idea of walking the ramp with her made me go blank every time I thought of it.

It was she who led me beautifully to the stage making me feel comfortable with her," says Ranbir, who was here with Katrina to promote their film Ajab Prem Ki Gajab Kahani set for release on November6.

Donned in Rohit Bahl's exotic collection Ranbir emerged in cream colour sherwani-style coat with pyjamas and Katrina had an embellished similar colour tunic to team up with him.

With models such as Muzzamil Ibrahim, Carol Gracias, Jessy Randhawa, Nayanika Chaterjee and Lisa Hayden, Bahl's says his show at the grand finale of the fashion week was based on 'Exotic India' signifying the country's inherent luxury.

"My collection signifies the golden bird and the golden peacock which India was known before the British era. The collection is called 'Yasas', a name which the nation was once known by for its elegance and grandeur," Bahl says. Bahl says Bollywood stars add an 'x-factor' to fashion shows besides the models on the ramp.

Appreciating Bahl's work, Katrina says, "Rohit has always been innovative, passionate and fearless about his designs and creations which make him the cherry of the cake. His designs have always left the audience applauding." On Ajab Prem Ki Gajab Kahani, she says love is ajab rather than gajab. "Love is more Ajab than Gajab. To the outsiders, it may seem ordinary but for the two in love, it's gajab or rather strange.

Aamir tried to restore peace between Salman and Shahrukh

Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan has disclosed that he had tried to broker a peace deal between Salman Khan and Shahrukh Khan after their infamous spat last year.

In an interview with a magazine Aamir said that he had gone to Shahrukh's residence for the first time.

In his life to make him patch up with Salman. Aamir added that very early in his talks with the two he had realised that he wouldn't succeed.

A dejected Aamir later became closer to Salman and the two of them are now taking on Shahrukh and his camp.

Aamir recently walked the ramp for the first time for Salman's charity Being Human. He concluded the interview saying that although.

He had tried his best and failed he hoped that the two superstars would patch up. He added that this is not just effecting their Bollywood careers but their personal lives too.

It may be recalled that during Katrina Kaif's birthday bash last year Shahrukh Khan and Salman had a spat. The fallout of this was that the entire Bollywood became divided into two camps. Since then the two stars have regularly avoided each other at public events and tinsel town parties. They also haven't missed any opportunity of taking digs at each other. It remains to be seen if any other celebrity can succeed where Aamir failed.

Aishwarya Rai gets honored by People magazine

After lighting up the silver screen with her scintillating beauty, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan will be seen gracing the cover of the famous People magazine.

Not just the cover, the Indian raver considered to be the most beautiful woman in the world has gone the whole hog and has a full documentary of the 15 years of her career since winning the Miss World crown, waiting to hit the unsuspecting masses.

Lots of delicious crumpets of trivia will be revealed, that is for sure. Like for instance very few people know that she has been feted.

As the most beautiful Miss World ever and has been presented with a gold medal to celebrate her beauty and the exclusivity of the achievement.

The edition will be replete with photographs of the gorgeous woman at various stages of what is an impressive and illustrious career.

She is the quintessential high profile female, married to the most eligible catch of Bollywood, daughter-in-law of the living legend Amitabh Bachchan. She has acted in over 40 movies and many of them have been mainstream Hollywood productions.

The beauty of this woman is the talk of the world and “Pretty Woman” Julia Roberts couldn’t stop herself from commenting that Aishwarya is “without doubt the most beautiful woman in the world with amazing green eyes….” With a Padmashree and an Order of France under her expensive Dior belt, her fame is truly formidable.

She deserves all the plaudit heaped on her. Not just facial comeliness, this Tulu lass has her heart in the right place as well. She willingly donated a hefty one crore to the soldiers during the Kargil war. Every one is charmed by the juxtaposition of warmth and reserve that she possesses, that is why the people of Netherlands saw it appropriate to name their most enchanting tulip after the lady.

The issue of People magazine featuring Nicole Richie and her baby caused the sales to plummet, we sincerely hope that our gorgeous “Ash” can make the magazine rise like a phoenix and the copies will be flying out of the stands before we one can say “Crazy kiya re…”.

Relive bond of friendship with `London Dreams`

Massive stage settings, rock concerts and music as a binding factor, Ajay Devgn-Salman Khan starrer `London Dreams`, which releases Friday, relies on the bond of friendship more than its rock background.

Produced and directed by Vipul Shah, the movie stars Asin Thottumkal in the female lead, while Akshay Kumar will be seen in a cameo. Rannvijay Singh and Om Puri too feature in the movie.

`London Dreams` is a drama about two friends and their relationships, their roles, individuality and problems," Ajay told reporters. Added Asin: "It is a musical with a lot of emotions and twists in the story. But it`s something that heavily relies on music."

Shot extensively in Paris and London, the story revolves around childhood friends Arjun (Ajay) and Mannu (Salman) who have a music lineage in their family history. Arjun dreams of being on stage as a performer to live up to his grandfather`s unfulfilled ambitions while Mannu has little interest in the instruments of his father, a music teacher.

Arjun`s determination takes him to London where he forms a band with Priya (Asin) and others. But his friend Mannu tries to make his livelihood as a wedding band performer in the village. Arjun eventually invites Mannu to London to complete his band contrary to his own belief that the latter can create a competition.

But Mannu surprises him by turning out to be an entertainer. With his unique style, he becomes more popular with the audiences leaving Arjun envious. His insecurity increases when he realises Priya is smitten by Mannu.

The band embarks on a three-city tour where Arjun deceives Mannu into promiscuous sex and illicit drugs. As the tour concludes, the band heads to London to perform at Wembley Stadium where Mannu comes to senses and chooses the righteous path and supports his friend.

"London Dreams" has managed a good buzz, courtesy the big names associated with it. Noteworthy is that the songs in the movie have been shot like live concerts. The movie is releasing with another-big budget venture `Aladin`.

Private Eleanor

Private Eleanor: On top of the world

Thanks to the Enoch Pratt Central Library's local music collection, I just discovered my favorite local band: Private Eleanor. And as luck would have it, they no longer exist. Typical me: I don't miss my water 'til my well runs dry. The album I heard was their fourth and final recording from 2007, Sweethearting. As the band is currently on hiatus, it remains their swan song in absentia.

Sweethearting
Private Eleanor
Beechfields (2007)

The band's introspective dreampop sound has been compared favorably to everyone from American Analog Set to Yo Lo Tengo, with nodding winks along the way to Big Star, The Go-Betweens, Mojave3, Red House Painters, Elliott Smith, and Wilco. Me, I hear SF's Sneetches in there for some reason. Whatever musical signposts they point to along the way, Private Eleanor's sound is (was?) definitely Twee with a capital T. And I like that. I mean, how can you not love a band that names an album Deciduous?

PE performing live

Though they've gotten some good national press, my favorite description of Private Eleanor comes from the Baltimore City Paper's Jess Harvel, who's a good a music writer as there is around town:
"Private Eleanor makes music so perfect for solitary drives on the cusp of late night/early morning that you want to rewind back a decade and listen to the band's music on an unlabeled C90 in your old beater's tape deck...The drizzly, cinematic sweep of Stahl's road-weary, twentysomething heartbreak is more sharply observed than ever, set to a lush swirl of bells, vibraphone, Hammond organ, and Rhodes piano meticulously arranged for the tingling of spines, crisply recorded and hitting all the band's now well-established sweet spots...Each song works beautifully as a little standalone slice of baroque indie-pop."
- Jess Harvel, Baltimore City Paper

PE performing live at Fletchers

According to the band's blog circa June 2009, leader Austin Stahl recorded a solo record that's available for free download at AustinStahl.net.

"It's a record I made by myself at home, just for fun (much like the earliest PE stuff) but I liked it enough to want to share it with you. This is the first music I've ever released under the name Austin Stahl. Go download it! If you like Private Eleanor music at all, I think you'll enjoy it." Heads up, Stahlinists!

***

DIGITAL DOWNLOADS

Private Eleanor's back catalog is now available digitally at their digital store: privateeleanor.bandcamp.com.

Their first three records had never been available digitally, until now... And their first album, Deciduous (2002), had been out of print completely, unavailable in ANY form, for over five years. As Austin Stahl says, "Well, we've remedied that at long last. Go get them all!"

Here's the band's press bio from the Beechfields record label.

PRIVATE ELEANOR BIOGRAPHY

“Built upon sturdy melodies and the type of harmonies rarely practiced these days, they dared to be genuine and pretty, hurt and poppy, confused yet direct. They made pop that the likes of Teenage Fanclub and Mojave 3 would happily call their own.”
—John Foster, BrightestYoungThings.com

Private Eleanor was a band from Baltimore, Maryland, who over the course of little more than five years was responsible for four records of unfashionably lovely folk-pop. For now, they’re on indefinite hiatus, having left behind little but those remarkable records – full of sly hooks, sparkling textures, and evocative, poetic lyrics as good as any you’re likely to hear.

Songwriter Austin Stahl began the band on a four-track cassette recorder in the bedroom of a Baltimore rowhouse, crafting a pair of intimate albums with the help of a rotating cast of friends. Stahl was soon hailed as the city’s best songwriter by the local City Paper, and began performing live with a full-time band. The higher-fidelity No Straight Lines followed in 2005, gaining slightly wider release (via Maryland label The Beechfields) and earning critical accolades on a national level (75orless.com called it “the final album Elliott Smith should have made.”). Before long, the band was bringing its subtle, harmony-laden pop songs to half-empty rooms throughout the nation.

Sweethearting was released in 2007. Recorded and mixed with the help of T.J. Lipple (Aloha) and Chad Clark (Beauty Pill), the album was performed mostly live in the studio, and showcased more than ever the vocal harmonies between Stahl and fellow singer Marian Glebes. The shifting backdrop provided by Chris Merriam (drums), Bruce Sailer (bass), and Drew Stevens (Rhodes/piano/organ) made for the band’s most varied and sonically deep record – at times the hushed vocals and vintage keyboards call to mind American Analog Set; other moments resonate with the quiet emotion of Ida or Red House Painters; some of the louder, catchier songs could pass for Yo La Tengo tackling your favorite Big Star tunes. It was the band’s best-received record to date, but they were unable to tour behind it and went on hiatus soon after.

As of this writing, Private Eleanor has no current plans to perform or record. Two new compilations feature what are, for now, the band’s final recordings: Love Goes On, a tribute to Grant McLennan of the Go-Betweens, for which Private Eleanor was chosen to contribute a cover of the title track; and This City of Neighborhoods, a new compilation from the Beechfields Record Label.

Wait and watch the sizzling chemistry of Ranbir and Katrina in Ajab Prem Ki..

Katrina and Ranbir Kapoor have come together on screen for the first time. In the film ‘Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahani’ and both of them feel that the other person is very fun loving and nice. The film has been produced by Ramesh Taurani and directed by Raj Kumar Santoshi and is all set to release on November 6.

The hottest topic being discussed about the film is the vibrant chemistry between Katrina Kaif and Ranbeer Kapoor. “It’s an ordinary love story about ordinary people leading ordinary lives, but told in an unusual way”, Katrina says. Adding to it, Ranbir says, “That’s the perfect way to describe it.”

“Chemistry is not something that two individuals have, it’s what two characters have in a film. It’s great that people are seeing this chemistry because this is a romantic film. I am happy that people can see it even in the promos of the film”, Ranbir says. Katrina agrees with him and says,“If you want the same thing and if your vision is the same, then you are working as a team. It leads to great chemistry.”
